Need help right now?

Tele-MANAS — 14416 (or 1-800-891-4416) Free, 24×7, confidential. Government of India national mental health helpline, available in English and 20 regional languages. Gambling is one of the concerns their counsellors are trained to handle.

If you are in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself, call 112 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department.

Start with the honest part

Betting is a paid form of entertainment. That is the only way it makes sense.

Every product on every betting platform is built with a mathematical edge in favour of the house. Sports margins, casino table rules, slot return percentages, crash-game multipliers — the specifics differ, but the direction does not. Over enough bets, the maths wins. That is not a flaw in how you play. It is how the products are designed to work.

This means:

  • No system, tip, strategy or guide can make gambling reliably profitable. Anyone selling you one is selling you something that does not exist.
  • A winning streak is not skill emerging. It is variance, and variance goes both ways.
  • The longer you play, the more closely your results converge on the house edge.

You can bet for fun and stay in control. You cannot bet for income. If you have started thinking of it as income, that is the point to stop and read the rest of this page.

Set your limits before you start, not after

Limits work when you set them in a calm moment. They fail when you set them while chasing a loss.

Money. Decide the amount you can lose this month without it affecting anything — rent, EMIs, groceries, your family, your savings. That is your ceiling. Not a target, a ceiling. When it is gone, you are done for the month.

Time. Decide how long a session lasts before you open the app. Set a phone alarm, not a mental note. Long sessions are where the biggest losses happen, because tiredness and frustration make decisions worse.

Frequency. Decide which days you play. “Whenever there is a match” is not a limit.

Deposit limits. Most platforms let you set a deposit cap in the account settings, or you can ask support to apply one. Set it when you open the account. A limit you have to actively remove is far more effective than one you have to remember to respect.

Three rules that matter more than any of the above:

  1. Never borrow to bet. Not from a person, not from a credit card, not from a loan app. This is the single clearest line between recreation and harm.
  2. Never chase losses. The urge to win it back is the mechanism by which a bad night becomes a bad year.
  3. Never bet to fix a mood. Betting because you are stressed, bored, lonely or low turns gambling into a coping tool, and coping tools escalate.

Warning signs

Read this list honestly. It is not a diagnosis, but recognising yourself here is worth taking seriously.

Money

  • Betting more than you planned, or more than you can afford
  • Chasing losses — increasing stakes to recover what you lost
  • Borrowing, selling things, or using money meant for bills to bet
  • Lying about how much you have lost, or hiding statements and app notifications

Behaviour

  • Thinking about betting when you are meant to be doing something else
  • Needing bigger stakes to feel the same excitement
  • Trying to cut down or stop and not managing it
  • Betting for longer than intended, most times you play

Feelings

  • Feeling restless, irritable or anxious when you cannot bet
  • Relief rather than enjoyment when you place a bet
  • Guilt or shame after a session
  • Betting to escape stress, low mood, loneliness or conflict

Life

  • Missing work, sleep, meals or commitments because of betting
  • Arguments with family or a partner about money or time spent
  • Withdrawing from people so they do not notice
  • Feeling that things would be fine if you could just win once

If several of these are true for you, this is not a willpower problem and you do not need to solve it alone. Gambling disorder is a recognised clinical condition with effective treatment. Skip to where to get help.

Tools that actually work

Willpower is the weakest tool available. Friction is the strongest. Put obstacles between the impulse and the app.

Free blocking software

BetBlocker is a charity-run tool, registered in Scotland, that is completely free with no registration and no personal details required. It blocks over 350,000 gambling websites and thousands of gambling apps, installs in about two minutes, and works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS. You can install it on unlimited devices.

The important part: once you set a blocking period, you cannot remove it until that period ends. That is the feature. It makes your calm-moment decision stick through a 2am one.

Available at betblocker.org.

Two practical notes. Do not layer multiple blockers — running two at once causes them to conflict and can leave you less protected than one working properly. And install it on every device you own, including the old phone in a drawer.

Phone-level controls

  • iPhone — Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Content Restrictions → Web Content → add sites to “Never Allow”. Set a Screen Time passcode and have someone else set it.
  • Android — Use Digital Wellbeing app timers, or Family Link with a trusted person holding the PIN.

Financial friction

  • Remove saved UPI IDs and cards from betting apps and browsers.
  • Keep your betting money in a separate account with only your monthly limit in it. Do not link your salary account.
  • Ask your bank whether they offer merchant-category blocking on gambling transactions — availability varies by bank in India, but it is worth asking.
  • Delete stored payment methods from your phone’s autofill.

Self-exclusion

Most operators can suspend or close an account on request, usually through support. Ask for a fixed-period self-exclusion — a week, a month, six months — rather than an informal “please stop me”, and get confirmation in writing.

Self-exclusion from one platform is not enough on its own. In India there is no central self-exclusion register covering all operators, so combine it with blocking software, which covers everything at once.

Tell someone

The single most effective step most people take is telling one person the truth about where they are. Secrecy is what allows the problem to grow. A partner, a sibling, a friend — one person who knows.

Myths worth dropping

“I’m due for a win.” Independent events have no memory. A coin that came up tails nine times is not more likely to come up heads. Slots, roulette and crash games work the same way.

“I just need to study the game more.” Knowledge helps at the margins in sports betting. It does not overcome the operator’s margin, and it does nothing at all in casino games.

“I can win it back.” This is the belief that turns a manageable loss into an unmanageable one. Losses are gone. Treating them as recoverable is the mechanism of harm, not the solution to it.

“I only bet what I can afford.” True for many people, and if it is genuinely true for you, that is what control looks like. Check it against your bank statement rather than your memory.

“Stopping means I admit I have a problem.” Taking a break is not a confession. People who are fine take breaks easily. Difficulty taking one is itself the useful information.

If someone you care about is gambling

You are probably exhausted, and you may have been lied to. That is common and it is not your failure.

What tends to help

  • Choose a calm moment, not the aftermath of a discovery.
  • Talk about what you have noticed and how it affects you, rather than accusations. “I’ve noticed you’re not sleeping and we’re arguing about money” lands better than “you’re an addict”.
  • Protect your own finances. Separate accounts, remove yourself from joint liabilities where you can, and stop giving cash.
  • Get support for yourself. Gam-Anon exists specifically for families of people with gambling problems, and Tele-MANAS on 14416 will speak to family members too.

What tends not to help

  • Paying off gambling debts. It removes the consequence and, in most cases, funds the next round.
  • Ultimatums you will not follow through on.
  • Monitoring and policing. It becomes your full-time job and it does not work.

You cannot make someone stop. You can be clear about what you will and will not do, and you can look after yourself while they decide.

Where to get help in India

Tele-MANAS — 14416

Also reachable on 1-800-891-4416. Free, 24×7, confidential, in English and 20 regional languages. This is the Government of India’s national mental health helpline, run under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with NIMHANS. Counsellors handle gambling among the concerns they are trained for, and can escalate to psychiatrists or refer you to a clinic near you.

This is the number to call first. </div>

SHUT Clinic, NIMHANS Bengaluru

The Service for Healthy Use of Technology at NIMHANS has treated online gambling, gaming and trading addiction since 2014 — India’s first dedicated service of its kind. People travel from across the country for consultations, and remote options have been available. Search for “NIMHANS SHUT Clinic” for current contact details and clinic timings before travelling.

Gamblers Anonymous

A free, anonymous, peer-support fellowship. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop gambling. There are no fees. In-person groups have met in Mumbai, Thane, Dombivli, Delhi and Chennai, and virtual and telephone meetings are open to anyone.

Meeting listings change, so check the current directory at gamblersanonymous.org rather than relying on any list published elsewhere.

Gam-Anon runs parallel groups for family and friends.

District Mental Health Programme

Every district in India has a DMHP unit offering mental health services through government hospitals and community health centres, typically free or at minimal cost. Tele-MANAS can refer you to the one nearest you.

Private care

Psychiatrists and clinical psychologists treat gambling disorder with cognitive behavioural therapy and, where appropriate, medication for co-occurring depression or anxiety. If you have health insurance, check whether outpatient mental health consultations are covered — under IRDAI rules, insurers are required to cover mental illness on the same basis as physical illness. <div class=”box box–note”>

If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, please treat that as the emergency it is. Call Tele-MANAS on 14416 or 112, or go to a hospital emergency department. Gambling debt feels permanent and is not. Debts get restructured, written down and paid off over time. You are the part of this that cannot be replaced. </div>

Under 18? This is not for you

You must be 18 or over to gamble, and 21 in some Indian states. Underage gambling is illegal and does real harm — it starts earlier, escalates faster, and the debts land on people with no way to absorb them.

For parents and guardians: filtering software such as BetBlocker’s parental control mode, Net Nanny or Qustodio can block gambling content across a child’s devices. Check for betting apps on their phone, watch for unexplained requests for money or missing cash, and keep your own UPI and card details off shared devices.

FAQ

How do I know if I have a gambling problem?

There is no single test, but the strongest indicators are: betting more than you intended on a regular basis, chasing losses, hiding it from people close to you, borrowing to fund it, and trying to stop without managing it. If you recognise several of the warning signs above, speak to a professional — Tele-MANAS on 14416 is free and confidential.

Can I get my money back after gambling losses?

No. Losses on a betting platform are not recoverable, and anyone who contacts you offering to recover them for a fee is running a scam. Recovery scams specifically target people who have just lost money. Never pay anyone who promises to retrieve gambling losses.

Does setting a deposit limit actually help?

Yes, when set in advance and made difficult to reverse. A limit you set while calm and cannot instantly remove is a genuine barrier. A limit you can raise in two taps mid-session is not.

Is blocking software free?

BetBlocker is free, funded by a registered charity, and requires no personal information. Some commercial alternatives charge a subscription. Do not run more than one blocker at a time — they interfere with each other.

Will taking a break fix it?

For some people a break is enough to reset. For others the difficulty of taking one is the signal that professional help would make a real difference. Either way a break costs you nothing and tells you something useful.

Can I self-exclude from all betting sites at once in India?

There is no central self-exclusion register in India covering all operators. Self-exclude from individual platforms through their support, and use blocking software to cover the rest in a single step.

Where can family members get help?

Tele-MANAS on 14416 will speak to family members, not just the person gambling. Gam-Anon runs peer-support groups specifically for families and friends. Look after your own finances and your own wellbeing — you are allowed to.

Our position

We publish content about betting platforms and we earn commission when people register through our links. That is set out in full in our Affiliate Disclosure.

Because of that, this page carries no affiliate links, no signup buttons and no operator promotions. It would be worth money to put them here. We think a page about gambling harm that tries to convert you is worse than useless, so it does not.

If the honest outcome of you reading this page is that you stop betting, that is a good outcome, and we would rather publish it than not.

18+ only. Betting involves a real risk of financial loss and can be addictive. Tele-MANAS: 14416 · Emergency: 112
